There’s a picture I used to keep in my mind—one of a perfect family. A strong father, a nurturing mother, a home filled with warmth, laughter, and stability. But for me, that frame cracked early. When I was just eight, my father left, and the image of what family should look like was shattered. I didn’t just lose a parent—I lost the person I had idolized, my hero.

In the silence that followed his absence, I started to see love in unexpected places. My mother, with all her quiet strength and unwavering devotion, stepped into the empty space. She was the one who stayed. Her presence reminded me that family isn’t built by bloodlines or bound by expectations—it’s created by commitment, presence, and love that doesn’t quit.

As I grew older, I came to understand that life doesn’t always fit the frame we’re handed. And that’s okay. The beauty is in how we rebuild. My grandparents’ home, my mother’s embrace, and the friends who became like siblings—these are the people who taught me what family truly means.

In Reflections from Heart, I share stories like these not to dwell in the past, but to illuminate the strength it takes to start over. Redefining family doesn’t mean forgetting who left. It means focusing on who stayed, who showed up, and who never stopped loving you.

If your picture of “family” looks different than you thought it would, know this: there’s nothing broken about it. Sometimes the frame has to break to show you what love really looks like.
